The fortified church of Codlea

The fortified church of Codlea is a Saxon church built in 1432 dedicated to Sf Georghe or Sf Mihail. It is the city oldest monument being surrounded by the bastions of the church Fortress and fortified walls.

The western frontage has a grandiose portal built up from unplaster limestone and the gable has three small windows. The church was under constant transformations many of them in the gothic period when the chore side got three more sides and hidden under a vault. Also during gothic period the building overcame two strong fires, the last one shaping the nowadays remarkable looks of the cassette nave celling. As a unique aspect this is the only church from Barsa Land without a church tower in its western side. Staring at the celling you may see the portrait of Johannes Stolz, the master building the cassette ceiling. You will be amazed how all the 252 square cassette with small wood rolls down pointed are painted. Each of these cassettes symbolizes another interpretation of Martin Luther’s rose. In the middle of the celling is an octagonal medallion with 12 cassettes illustrating the raze crown for the winged angels portraits. The medallion has also a German inscription saying „Not all praying God reach the Kingdom of heaven”. In 1709 it is bought the baroque organ with 2000 tubs, two manuals and 28 registers. The Belfry Tower built on the old Blacksmith Tower received in 1794 a roof looking like an onion. The present roof shape is since 1892 when all the neo-gothic windows, the inner stair and lighting rod were reconstructed. The tower clock sets the hours in Codlea which functions since 1906 on an electric mechanism and its dials are electric lighted. The sounds produced by the four bells were in major Do. Two wood blue and red colored candelabras are the light source inside the church. Nowadays every Sunday are held inside the fortified church of Codlea two services, one in German and the other in Hungarian. A very good opportunity to better know the surroundings of Brasov is visiting the Saxon fortified churches from Barsa Land, just like the Fortified Church of Codlea.
