Rasnov fortress

Rasnov fortress, located in Brasov, is a peasant fortress, built in 1211-1225 to ward off against the Tatars attacks. Since agriculture was the main occupation of the builders, the fortress was named the peasant fortress. Declared a national monument, the fortress situated on rocky ridges, is composed of the oldest towers: on the south side is the weapon tower Arms and on the east side is the Bathory tower.
Fortress gathered inside the entire community of Rasnov, sheltering inhabitants of the natural disasters and military invasions. Forced to stay inside the fortress for long periods of time, the fortress was transformed in a sort of house.
For those passionate about the etymology of the word "Rasnov" it comes from the base word "roz" which, in Latin, German and Slavic, means rose. In medieval times the rose was chosen as the emblem of the city.

The filmmakers certainly know that Sergiu Nicolaescu films, „Dacii” (1966) and „Nemuritorii” (1974) had the most shots moulded at Rasnov. The international Romanian-German-Italian co-production „Columna” (1967) directed by Mircea Dragan, was also filmed in the fortress, even nominated at the „Oscar” and „Golden Globe” for best film. The stones inside the fortress knew the hooves of the ruler Mihai Viteazu horse, who in 1600 after the defeat from Miraslau, was forced to shelter in the fortress waiting for reinforcements from the Wallachia. Legends have not avoided the fountain inside the fortress, the 146 meters deep well. Two Turk prisoners diced the well for 17 years, during 1623-1640, by this hoping to be allowed to leave. Reality says actually the lack of water inside the fortress was the real reason for the construction of the well, because, once the fountain was built the residents did not have to supply with water from outside the fortress, so could easily cope with the invasions. There is also a medieval art museum hosting galleries, weapons, armours or specific costumes for that century or antique furniture. You should know that two objects a little less common in the contemporary period, but quite common in the 17th and 18th centuries are the fortress attractions: the torture mask and the yoke used to transport prisoners. But before you get inside the Rasnov fortress, you will figure that out that the fortress walls are built out of stone and brick, they are 5 meters high and the south wall has the largest width, which reaches in some places at 1.5 meters width. To prevent fires, both towers and walls were covered with tile. If you want your name to remain posted for posterity somewhere in Brasov, you can do this by planting a rose in a square, where, along with the planted flower will also be a plate engraved with your name for tourists to read it. Even if it was destroyed by fire and so transformed the abandoned fortress in ruins, today the giant letters of the fortress from up are watching at the smooth functioning of Rasnov. Vicissitudes of time set their mark on to the residents of the area, but a testament to the tumultuous history persistence of Rasnov is the Rasnov fortress itself.
