Located on a hill of 980 meters high is positioned at the foot of Magura Codlei hill, the fortress is the witness of the 12 Saxons settlements from Barsa Land. The city was placed on the so-called "Sachsenweg" (Saxon Road) which enables access from Barsa Land to Sibiu. Because it had a lot to endured considerable damages due to the Turks and Tartars invasions in Transylvania, the fortress was rebuilt in 1432 by the guilds of craftsmen who lived at that time in-between the building walls. The building was not impressive at that period, being just a stone fortress with the necessary elements regarding defence strategy and serving strictly military purposes. Following the intense excavations since 1921-1923 and 1964-1966 was discovered that the fortress had 100 meters length with the length oscillating between 12-55 meters due to the land adaptation. On the 14th of 2001 were celebrated 800 years since the Teutonic Knights built the Black Fortress Codlea and in honour to this event they shed light on the reality of this period when the Teutonic Knights accompanied about 90 participants on their way to the city. The activities included at the fortress were archery or Knights fighting simulations. He Saxons Road where the fortress was located appears in the map designed by Johannes Honterus in 1532 by placing a shelter for those settlers who inhabited the area at that time. Curiosity will make you go to that place where the archaeological excavations of the 20th century brought to light the one defending Codlea, which is the Black fortress of Codlea.
