The Black Church is the largest religious building in gothic style of south-eastern Europe. With a capacity of 5,000 seats, the church has a length of 90 meters, a height of 37 meters and a 65 meter tower cross. The plan after the architects guided when building the monument is the hall-church with three naves of the same height, this model is preferred in the German area, place where basically some of the masters and architects came.
St Mary's Church is the original name of the famous religious settlement of Brasov, and perhaps its construction began in 1377. The building construction lasted for 100 years, during which the church was greatly affected by Ottoman invasion in 1421. It is said that the church was initially provided with two towers, but the materials drawbacks made the second tower not to be built anymore and the only existing tower was completed after 37 years from finishing the construction of the church. And only this unique tower houses three giant bells. Only one of them, which is the biggest in the country and among the largest in Europe, is only 6300 kg. The humanist Johannes Honterus made his presence felt inside the Black Church when he initiated the practice of Evangelical-Lutheran services held in German instead of the Catholic services. Besides, the above mentioned, who took the initiative to build a paper factory in Brasov forever rests his body in this church. After the fire that totally scorched the church in 1689, it took another 100 years to rebuild it. Once with this reconstruction the roof has been extended and the interior renovation lost the gothic influences, turning it in baroque style. The current altar, which dates from 1866, is built in gothic style. After the fire the Romanian builders had not enough knowledge at that time for the restoration of the vaults, so there were brought craftsmen from abroad not firing, were that were the Romans and for this reason. The fire also turned to ashes the 22 altars placed near the main altar with statues of gilded silver. Noticeable is that the name of the Black Church is the main cause of this terrible fire. Regarding the mechanical organ Buchholz still accompanying every soul touched by the sound of the weekly concerts held inside the church, is the largest and only still operating in the south-eastern part of Europe. It has no more than 3993 pipes and 76 registers. The interior of settlement offers for admiration mural paintings (representing the Virgin Mary and Jesus Christ, the Virgin with St. Catherine and St. Barbara on right and left) of 15th century, a lot of antiques including a bronze font that defies time, keeping since the year 1472. From the series of paintings, "Wedding at Cana" is on the north side frontal wall of the nave. Also the famous highlighted city emblem from the pillar in front of the pulpit must be seen. Atypical for a religious building is the statue exposed on the north buttress representing a child who gives the impression that it will roll falling. The legend says about one of the craft masters jealous on a young man colleague, shoving him in the moment the young picked up something from the cornice. In memory of the young man the other masters made this statue. And the dowry of items making this an unique church in south-eastern Europe are not yet exhausted, meaning here is the most important collection of Oriental carpets (curious as to know how can carpets be stored against the moth invasion for such a long time). It may be that such a dowry has its source from Asia Minor and donated by visitors who came to marvel at the sight of the imperious construction. Archaeological excavations for the reorganization and rehabilitation of the church yard uncovered 50 graves with the bodies of those who were buried here since the middle Ages and the modern era. In competition with the first tourist attraction in the country (Bran Castle), in the heart of Brasov, where photography and filming are forbidden, where visitors annually cross to approximately 100,000 tourists, there is the Black Church.
