The founder of the church was the German ruler of the Knight Order Herman von Salza, the passionate ones of church history will surely appreciate this information. Legends say that the place was also called the church of the three orphans, who left all their belongings to the church and were buried under the altar. Also the church was the place where in 1395 the Wallachia ruler of that period Mircea cel Batran signed the Alliance Treaty with the king of Hungary Sigismund of Luxemburg. Surrounded by a solid defense wall the church faces many attacks from the Ottomans, the army ruled by Vlad Tepes or of Gabriel Bathori. On the last Sunday before the St Bartholomew celebration (24th of August) tradition is to go on a pilgrimage to the Patron of St Bartholomew. The celebration service gathers around the Saxon communities and once the service is ended, begins the feast and the fanfare bands play and people dance on traditional German songs. The building has 55 meters length and the colons stand on solid foundations. On the walls are romantic and gothic motives paintings. Because of the earthquake in 1833 the consolidation of the classic style altar was necessary and also setting up a new organ with 25 registers. The building’s tower has also a clock installed in 1923. Due to the emigrants donations 1500 traditional Saxon objects form a typical Saxon house: fabrics, Saxon costumes, furniture, carpentry, agriculture tools are to be found since 2003in a museum inside the oldest building from Brasov, the St Bartholomew church.
