The Graft Bastion

The Graft Bastion near the White Tower and the Black Tower standing as guarding towers and beneath which the water falls through a channel with the same name (Graft) is located in the north-west of Brasov. The Bastion was also called the Gate Bastion because of its shape.

The bastion was built in 1515-1521 by the saddlery guild and intended to be the bridge between the White Tower and the defenders of the fortress. The connection was made through a bridge leading in slope up to the entrance of the White Tower where the soldiers launched a staircase allowing access to the tower. The bastion with its rectangular shape and thick base of about 4 meters, with the roof in two waters and structured on two floors and an attic still preserves the oil gasp and loopholes. Through the loopholes the fortress soldiers fired towards the enemy with heavy rifles, launching harquebuses or actually pour hot molten pitch or other solutions. After a heavy rainfall in August 1809 Graft Bastion outer wall is weakened due to flooding. Therefore, the architects have built three support arches over the river Graft. Two of these arches and the portion of the wall they supported disappear in the 20th century as a result of punching the wall to provide a second exit for the Royal cinema and due to the house construction for the German manufacturer Friedrich Czell. After the consolidation works in 2004-2005 the Graft Bastion entered into the tourist circuit. Inside the bastion is a section of the County Museum of History Brasov with the theme „ The craftsmen from Brasov - defenders of the fortress ”. On the second floor of the bastion are armours, weapons and ammunition used to defend Brasov. For the nostalgic ones, you had the chance to drink a cup of mulled wine at the Graft pub and admire the swords placed on the walls of the pub an especially to enter through the iron gate then of course reading this paragraph is going to wake some memories. The Graft Bastion remains today a landmark of Brasov a great historical significance, waiting to be visited and admired.
