Johannes Honterus was an important figure in the Saxon culture from Transylvania. His name is strongly connected with the typing press in Brasov and the Reform, author of various history treaties, publisher in Greek, Latin and German of school books and press typing the world maps, and among his most established works was the geographic and astronomy “Cosmographia” (1542). He is also known for designing the first map of Transylvania (1532) or inventing the press in Brasov (1539), the well-known book among the European cultural circles “Portrayal of the World” (1530) or for writing “The Latin Grammar” (1530). In „ Portrayal of the World” Johannes Honterus illustrated through maps that all three Romanian parts were part of the old Dacia which gives to Romanians continuity on this land. Johannes Honterus was the inventor of the first press in 1539, also the organizer of the German school, the nowadays high school, the first paper mill in Romania (1546) and the school library (1547). Johannes Honterus died in 1549 and buried in the Black Church Brasov. Celebrating 400 years since birth of the Saxon humanitarian was built a statue in the yard of the Black Church, which was made by the sculptor Harro Magnussen from Berlin.
