Brasov fortress

Brasov fortress was initially represented by the construction in 1524 of a stone and brick lookout tower with a horseshoe shape. The tower was built on three floors equipped with ambrajuri at the bottom floors and heavy oil holes on the upper floor. Along the way there were four towers built of wood added to the bastion. After 5 years since the fortification was built, the ruler of Moldavia, Petru Rares, after the siege of Brasov he commands the tower and bastion to be destroyed.
After extending King Ferdinand I influence, King of Hungary in Transylvania the Arco Count, the subordinate of Giovanni Battista Castaldo orders the fortress to be extended. Now, the central tower of the fortress receives an extension of three small artillery towers and in 1611 a water ditch and a ground wall to be trace and moat. Brasov fortress undergoes reconstruction works by the Principality of Transylvania authorities and also during this year, in 1625 was digging inside the courtyard of the fortress an 81 meters deep well.

The building with quadrilateral shape, towers at corners that propped above the Italian defence towers had as a way to access only one entry which was made by a drawbridge. The fortress served as a shelter for the inhabitants forced to flee away from the Habsburgs army. Misfortune makes that the Habsburg garrisons occupy the fortress, and thus installed, they oppressed the city for a long time, among which we remember the clearing of the surrounding vineyards. In 1773 the Habsburg Emperor Joseph II ordered the restoration of the fortress, the rebuilt form being preserved till present. Back then was built and attached also the horseshoe shaped tower to the central hexagon and also the two-storey building positioned on the east side of the fortress. After nine years the fortress was given to the city to be bought. Because the townspeople did not want to buy, the fortification has worked for a period as a prison where Turks and French prisoners stood and during the plague epidemic was arranged a special section for those who had such symptoms. Among other utilities that they had Brasov fortress included the transformation of the assembly in a warehouse of the State Archives territorial structure, this change occurring during the years 1954-1975. When you walk into the fortress, you can see an inscription with the city emblem, inscription dating from 1630. Currently, for leisure and tourism, some restaurants wait for your visit where the landmark in the history of Brasov is nailed in the Brasov fortress.
