The Ethnography museum Brasov

The Ethnography museum Brasov presents over 21.000 value objects typical for the rural communities around Olt (Tara Oltului) and Barsa Land (Tara Barsei), Rupea and Bran dated since the 17th – 20th centuries. The building of the present Folklore museum was built in 1902 and houses ethnographic and folklore art collections illustrated on pottery, glassware, dyed eggs, glass painted icons, national costumes and fabrics, metal, bone or skin.

In 1908 due to some Saxon collectors’ donations takes place in Brasov the first public museum collection. Subsidiary to these donations the passionate popular art collector Julius Teutsch grounded the Saxon museum of Barsa Land (Tara Barsei). It was just natural in between the wars the private or public donations to rise and the Saxon museum of Barsa Land (Tara Barsei) enrich its collections. In 1937 a new museum shapes out, the Cultural Association museum Astra (Muzeul Asociatiunii Culturale ASTRA) due to some Romanian scholars work concerning the Romanian popular art and ethnographic objects. By combing these two, the Saxon museum of Barsa Land (Tara Barsei) with the Cultural Association Museum Astra (Muzeul Asociatiunii Culturale ASTRA) results the Regional museum Brasov (1950) including also the Ethnographic Section (1967).The present Ethnography museum Brasov opens to visits in 1990 along with the other two administrative centers, Ethnographic museum Sacele and Gheorghe Cernea Ethnographic museum (Rupea). At the moment is exhibited in museum a permanent exposition about the fabric handling (The Fabric heritage) and therefore the national costume making. It is a documentary-pedagogical exhibition bringing to light the technologies, tools and specific fabric products. Amon the temporary exhibitions are to be mentioned „The bread civilization– South Transylvania agriculture activities”, „Lisa, a village from Olt Land( Tara Oltului)”, „Close straingers– in memory of Jean Cuisenier at 80 years old”, „ Dimitrie Gusti professor in memory of Dragus” or „Contemporary villages”. The elementary school pupils can attend in collaboration with the museum at various activities and workshops like clay handling, glass painted icons, weaving and doll manufacturing. The Ethnographic museum Brasov is for those dreaming at a traditional weeding with early national costumes or those recharging by the moment they step inside the house of the grandparents and great grandparents.
