Schei Gate (Poarta Schei)

Schei Gate (Poarta Schei) also called the “Walachia Gate” („porta valachica”), was built between 1827-1828 to ease the communication between the people from Schei and the fortress. It has the shape of a triumph arch with three openings; the middle arch is the main opening while the other two are smaller being placed on sides made for pedestrians.

Being placed near Catherine’s Gate (Poarta Ecaterinei) the Schei Gate (Poarta Schei) is built from stone and brick in classical style and was used also as storage. On the upper part of the gate are Latin inscriptions saying that the gate was built ten years later after King Francisc I visited Brasov in 1817. Watching over the present Nicolae Balcescu Street it is worth one’s while to stroll passing under the building with four Latin inscriptions showing not only the year when the Schei Gate (Poarta Schei) was built but also the settings of its construction.
